One of the aspects of covering jewelry that I love is the cyclical nature and how the cultural influences collide. Sometimes there is an overriding theme that fills the air and the filters through the lens of different modern designers collections and other times, it is just the right moment when pieces, styles or a direction come back into popularity.

Such is the case of the amount and selection of bracelets we have been seeing over the past few seasons. At the beginning of 2019, it became apparent at the 76th Annual Golden Globes and then the 25th Critic’s Choice awards that bangles, cuffs and flexible style bracelet climbing up the arm is on top of mind of A-lister’s stylists and the stars themselves. This has also been a growing theme in the fine jewelry market with new takes on line bracelets, wide pierced bracelets in white metals inspired by Art Deco styles and wide yellow gold chunky styles inspired by mid-century through vintage ‘70s looks. The tennis bracelet has also gotten a make-over, as well as link chain bracelets which are rendered big, chunky and studded with diamonds.

At the recent Winter Antiques Show at the Park Avenue Armory in NYC, museum quality jewels filled the display cases of Macklowe Gallery, Kentshire Galleries, Shrubsole, A La Vieille Russie and James Robinson. But what I noticed most was the strong showing of bracelets from Georgian through the mid-20th century. Many were yellow gold and the most popular periods were Victorian and Retro 40s. These styles were wide, bold and gutsy and would make more of a statement worn on their own rather than with other bracelets. Or they could be worn one on each wrist. There were also a number of Art Deco flexible bracelets that could be combined on one wrist.

Whichever style you choose to add to your collection or the way in which you decide to style your bracelets, our prediction is that we will see a lot more wrist action as we head out to OMBAS (The Original Miami Beach Antique Show) and wait for the 2019 SAG Awards (which is the same weekend as the show) and the 91st Annual Academy Awards’ red carpet arrivals on February 24, 2019
